Enjoyed a lovely hike with friends this afternoon. The way down was much more pleasurable than the way up as I carried Laurel on my back the whole way.  Intense. I only fell once (slid down one steep slope on my bun). It is customary for me to do so.  We all had a great hoot over it.  Laurel too (who was not hurt)! Warmest day of the year yet, we busted out the sunblock. This time of year is so beautiful here.  The hills are only green for a short while in the spring (summer sun turns them brown).  At the top we chorused "the hills are alive, with the sound of muuuuusic, ah ah ah ah ah." You should've heard us- it really added to the beauty of the moment.

Good times, good exercise, good night!

Race Day

R2r hannah go ladybugs2009-04-03

We made it back from our little Spring Break trip just in time for "the big race".  Our town hosts a relay ace for kids (adults too) each year- someday I would like to compete too. I've agreed to allow my Dad and Brother to be on my team should they pass the preliminary qualifying heats.

There are 4 legs to the relay race: running, kayaking, biking, and a pretty intense obstacle course.  Our girls (on separate teams) took on the paddling without any previous experience (okay we had one practice day on the water and then did a lot of "broom rowing" in our living room).

Yes, real boats, a real river, and the real potential for tipping over.  I ran along the shore with Laurel on my back, camera around my neck, shouting and cheering and praying.

No worries though, these girls never cease to amaze me. They were as cool as cucumbers, assuring me that they had it all figured out. Yes, I gave them the whole, "Its not about winning- just have fun" speech...but really, I was reveling in the fact that they were leaving all the other boats in their wake!

It was a beautiful day, the warmest yet this year. Emma and her friend did the race as a tandem, they worked so hard!  After they crossed the finish line they used their water bottles to cool themselves off.

It is so great living in a community that encourages kids to experience ALL that our local environment has to offer. Getting outdoors and being active in the beauty of God's Creation is good for the spirit- a life-long enjoyment. The girls made us proud and we look forward to many more Race Days.

I've waited 12 years for this

Skiing with carl his first turns2009-01-01

Hey, who is that?  Is that the Michelin Man?  Is that the guy who said that he thought he might never be interested in skiing?  Could that be my husband?  The One who assured me that skiing is cold, expensive and dangerous for your ankles?  Yes indeed. That's him alright.

Skiing with carl cocoa in the logdge2009-01-01

For Christmas, I outfitted him in head to toe Smartwool.  We're talking base layers, neck gaiters, ski socks-- the whole shebang.  We stocked up on little hotties feet and hand warmers, and of course cocoa always helps. Cold?  Not a chance!

Skiing with carl thumbs up2009-01-01

Our entire family was gifted season passes, rental gear and lessons by the generous folks at our local ski resort.  "It helps to have connections" Carl said to me with a tiny wink as they handed us our passes today.  He is the very puffed up and inflated designer of their website.  Expensive?  FREE!!

As for the potential ankle injuries?  That I cannot help him with!  Lots and lots of cheek biting today for me.  As an experienced skier (well sort of, I've had to take a few years off because he has refused to participate- either that or I've had a baby growing inside me or attached to me in some fashion) I wanted to give him all kinds of tips and advice.  We all know how well that would go over.  So, instead I waved goodbye to both him and his instructor as they trudged off towards the rope tow.

Skiing with carl happy me2009-01-01

Me?  Well I was so stinkin' happy to be back on that mountain.  Any mountain.  I've missed it. I've got  rosey cheeks, chapped lips, and tired tired legs to prove it. We had 11" of new powder, hardly a cloud in the sky and did I mention that we left our kids with friends?  Perfect.

Good job to day Carl!  You did not exceed the maximum allowance of F-bombs and never once did you throw your poles at me. Oh wait, you didn't have any!

You made it.  You skied one whole day!  I am proud of you and can't wait for next time.  Now, let me start the bath for you...you're gonna need it.
